Claygate’s Allotment Orchard Collaborative Planting Event and Castaway Apple Tree Give-away23/3/2024 COPSE provided Claygate Pearmain apple trees for Vale Road Allotment in Claygate, planted as an espalier boundary feature for the car-park and Telegraph Lane Allotment for a bee-keeping collective. Thank you for the funding from Claygate Parish Council, Surrey County Council, Railtrack and the Tree Council for making this event take place. Special thanks also to Tom Nancarrow of Adam’s Apples who provided us with 20 heritage apple trees for Claygate residents, replacement trees for Warlingham Forest Schoolers Orchard, several trees donated to other Community Orchard spaces in Surrey and five trees saved for a planned Surrey orchard-space near Godalming.

COPSE planted four fruit trees in winter 2022, with Waverley Borough Council Development Officer Kate Douglas and Parsons Green tenants, in a small space, with a cut and collect conducted within an 8m x 8m area of grass (http://www.copseorchardproject.org/blog/archives/09-2023), between the fruit trees in September 2023. During mid-March we scarified an 8m x 4m section of this grass-space, sowing a neutral lowland meadow seed-mix. We hope to have a flourishing meadow, with wildflowers, butterflies and developing fruit, for the summer-time. The Green also supports a mature walnut tree and a Golden Delicious apple tree transplanted by WBC in winter 2023. |
