COPSE New Year Wassail for 2020's crop

COPSE could not wait for the Orchard Wassails taking place on the twelth night after Christmas, so we brought the New Year in with a small Wassail to ensure the 2020 crop, with the following reading:

'Stand fast, root! bear well, top!
Pray God send us a good howling crop:
Every twig, apples big;
Every bough, apples enow!'

Followed by a chorus of howls from the COPSE... to banish the bad spirits of 2019!

Flowering Cherry Orchards on Streetview

Orchards are defined as fruit trees spaced at least 20m apart. We have them by our streets in the form of Flowering Cherry trees, coming into their own during spring and shown off by Google Streetview, such as Cherry Tree Avenue, Haslemere (below). However, as car ownership has increased as shown in the graph, so our street trees have come under pressure. COPSE would like to get Cherry Tree Street Orchards recognised and appreciated as important urban features for the well-being of both people and wildlife, in a time when 'car has become king'!
