November Apple Juicing and Planting Saturdays, with Waverley Borough Council

12th November, Parson Green, Haslemere, COPSE planted two apple trees (Tydeman’s Early Worcester and Blenheim Orange) and pressed 4 pints of juice with Waverley residents. A further three trees are planned as part of a January Wassail.

19th November, Queenways, Cranleigh. We helped 12 residents press 8 pints of juice, planted-up a tyre-planter with spring bulbs and tidied the Community Garden Orchard-space for Winter shutdown.

26th November, Eashing Cemetery, Godalming. The Town Council, Waverley, Roots for the Future and COPSE collaborated with 18 residents to plant 12 walnut trees on a five-year plan to create an Orchard-trail around Eashing Cemetery.

Beryl Harvey Meadow Orchard Planting with the Cranleigh School

We planted a new orchard at Beryl Harvey Nature Reserve in Cranleigh, with the Conservation Group led by Phil Townsend and 9 pupils from the Cranleigh School, planting four heritage apple trees and a ‘wild’ crab apple. The trees included a Scarlet Nonpareil, Egremont Russet, Ashmead Kernel all on semi-dwarfing (MM106) root-stocks and an Arthur Turner on a vigorous (MM111) root-stock. The meadow also supports some walnut tree saplings. Planting the ‘wild’ crab apple, which have a more extended flowering period helps to pollinate domestic apple trees and their pollination will be aided by apple trees on the adjacent allotment.
