After a bout of Covid in early December, Claire and Gareth went on a West Country orchard break later in the month, to meet a Community-minded fruit grower, Tom from Adam's Apples (www.adamsappletrees.co.uk/). Tom has supplied us with some fine, healthy, fruit trees for several projects over the last few years and showed us his growing space, which Tom is currently converting to organic. We stayed at Highdown Farm's Cider Barn (highdownfarm.co.uk/the-farm/), adjacent to their lovely chicken-grazed orchard-space. We wish all our orchard friends, partners and volunteers a fruitful 2024 and look forward to seeing you all at our Wassail!

Thankyou to Haslemere Town Council for funding juicing events in December, to use up the remaining Swan Barn apples, showing children how apple juice is made and to taste fresh, unpasteurised juice. In the morning we juiced a mix of heritage Tydesman’s Late Worcester, Edmund Jupp and Golden Pippin apples, with the help of 19 two-four year olds at Grayswood Forest School, led by Kate and Richard…..
…… Then at St. Christophers Church, teenagers from The Den juiced the remaining apples guided by Verity, with mulled juice made by Lara. Thank you all for making it a special festive juicing!
Today we premiered A Year in an Orchard at Haslemere Town Hall, a short film promoting Orchards and cider making. In October we picked 8 trugs of apples at John’s cider orchard at Enton in Witley for Misty Moon Cider (Farnham), with thanks to Justin and Jake of Nespresso. Sadly, the Garden Cider Company had closed and we wish the directors of the Company best wishes with their next projects and thanks for producing lovely cider and dealing with food waste this last decade. We also cut and dug-up Himalayan blackberry from John’s Orchard, a thuggish climber that’s running amok! |
