Weedy Pond Week and new Shalford Orchard proposed

Week commencing 17th June we weeded three different sites. On Monday Gareth weeded trees on Puttenham’s Hog's-Back Orchard, with all the trees in Jubilee Field weeded the week before. The aquatic plants planted in the pond on the Hog’s-Back had grown slightly. On Tuesday COPSE did a weeding event at Eashing Cemetery with Waverley BC and on Wednesday at Redgate Orchard with Witley PC. Weed suppression is as important as watering to ensure good tree survivorship. On the Thursday we had a meeting with Shalford Orchard Group and Guildford BC to discuss a new orchard-space next to the village Cemetery.

Witley Village Orchard Bioblitz

On 8th June COPSE conducted a mini-Bioblitz at Redgate Allotment Orchard as part of Witley and Eashing Fruitful Parishes Project. Six allotment holders attended a safari around the allotment, where we identified species-rich acid grassland (included cudweed, bird’s-foot and sheep’s-sorrel), on path edges near the Cemetery site and a single slow-worm was spotted. In terms of biodiversity the orchard-spaces on Witley Parish land are all moderate condition, which includes both Robert’s Green and John’s Steere’s Enton orchard (best potential for enhancement, as it supports veteran tree features). In the afternoon we had a stall explaining the project at Milford fete.
